Washington, D.C. – Congressman Colin Allred (TX-32) released the following statement after voting in favor of the bipartisan agreement to lift the debt ceiling and prevent catastrophic default.

“This bipartisan agreement first and foremost, prevents an economically disastrous default and ensures we pay our bills and obligations through the end of 2024. After a tough few years of rising costs on working families, default and the related economic damage it would do is unacceptable.

“There’s no doubt that we must take a critical look at our spending and find appropriate ways to balance our budget, but the time and place for that discussion is the appropriations and budgeting process, not by risking the full faith and credit of the United States government.

“Though it is far from perfect there are some important provisions for our veterans including removing barriers to access SNAP, funding for critical VA health care and support for military families, while also protecting investments critical to Texas’s economic future like the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law and the CHIPS and Science Act.

“It also takes steps to modernize our energy permitting processes, which is critically important for Texas. I hope that Congress will take up a larger bipartisan package that builds on these steps and includes much-needed investment in transmission and the ability to complete new energy projects in a reasonable time frame.

“I will continue to work to be part of the solution in Washington, and I look forward to working with folks in both parties to ensure our federal budget works for Texans, grows our economy and creates jobs.”
